Gina had little choice but to go with him—for the moment, at any rate. The open-topped Lancia had already created a jam in the narrow, one-way street. Lucius turned a deaf ear to the irate shouts from those unable to proceed, slinging the suitcase in the boot and making sure Gina was secure in her seat before going round to get behind the wheel.

‘I’m not coming back to San Cotone with you,’ she stated as he put the vehicle into motion.

‘How do you intend stopping me from taking you there?’ he asked.

A good question, she acknowledged wryly. Jumping from a moving car was not to be recommended.

‘You don’t really want this,’ she appealed. ‘You can’t possibly want it!’

‘Do not,’ he returned, ‘tell me what I do or do not want. I make my own decisions.’

‘A very bad one in this case.’

‘The only one open to me.’

‘But not to me.’ Gina was doing her best to stay on top of her emotions. ‘As I already told you, I want nothing from you.’

Expression unyielding, he said, ‘You may have no choice in the matter.’

He meant the possibility of her being pregnant, Gina surmised. ‘A chance I’m prepared to take,’ she claimed with a great deal more certainty than she actually felt.

Lucius concentrated on extracting the car from a three-lane confluence before answering, ‘You consider it no more than a chance?’

‘No slur on your virility, but yes.’

The taunt made no visible impression. ‘And if that chance became reality?’
